As part of a settlement with the FTC, Apple has agreed to refund customers $32.5 million for in-app purchases made without their knowledge.  It all comes down to a flaw in the App Store: after you input your password to authorize a purchase, unlimited additional purchases can be made over the next 15 minutes without further consent.  Many iPhone and iPad users weren’t aware of this, and learned about it the hard way- by letting their children make a single purchase, only to find out they’d rung up huge bills on additional purchases.  The FTC says Apple received “tens of thousands” of complaints.  In addition to the refunds, Apple will also be required to change its billing procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.  It’s not just surprise unauthorized purchases people hate paying for- researchers forecast that by 2017, almost 95% of apps downloaded will be free.
