Over 500 Prisoners In Arizona Jail Test Positive For COVID-19

Nearly half of the inmates housed at the Arizona State Prison Complex Tucson Whetstone Unit have tested positive for COVID-19. Officials said that 517 out of the 1,066 prisoners have contracted the coronavirus.

The inmates are being housed in a separate area of the prison and are receiving appropriate medical care.

"Those inmates who tested positive are currently being housed as a cohort together in separate areas and are receiving appropriate medical care," the Arizona Department of Corrections said in a statement. "They will not be allowed back into the general population until they have been medically cleared."

As a precaution, meals and medical services will provided to inmates in their housing units.

"In addition to measures that are already in place, all inmates at Whetstone will receive meals and all required medication and medical services in their housing units."

Officials said that staff at the prison were supplied with personal protective equipment, including N95 masks, gloves, and face shields, while all inmates were given fabric face masks they are required to wear.
