The Tennessee Volunteers have named true freshman Faizon Brandon as their starting quarterback for the upcoming 2026 season. Brandon, who hails from Greensboro, North Carolina, won a competitive three-way battle against sophomore George MacIntyre and Colorado transfer Ryan Staub. The announcement was made by head coach Josh Heupel during a team meeting on Monday (August 24).
Brandon, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound quarterback, joined the Volunteers as a five-star recruit, ranked as the No. 3 quarterback in the 2026 class by 247Sports. He is the first true freshman to start a season opener for Tennessee since 2004. The Volunteers will begin their season at home against Furman on September 5.
Brandon's journey to the starting role was not straightforward. Initially, Tennessee considered transfer quarterbacks, but ultimately did not sign any. When former starter Joey Aguilar was denied an extra year of eligibility, the path cleared for Brandon. His strong performance in spring practices and preseason scrimmages solidified his position as the starting quarterback.
Brandon's high school career at Grimsley High School was impressive, with a record of 35-1 as a starter, two state championships, and numerous accolades. His dual-threat capabilities, including over 6,000 passing yards and 1,200 rushing yards, make him a promising addition to Tennessee's offense, which returns eight starters.
Despite being a true freshman, Brandon's potential has already drawn comparisons to some of Tennessee's greatest quarterbacks, including Peyton Manning and Joshua Dobbs. As Tennessee aims for a championship window in 2027, Brandon's development this season will be crucial.
