PAUL & RINGO: More on Their Duet
Ringo Starr was in the guest seat Monday night on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he talked about "Home to Us," the song about Liverpool that he duets with Paul McCartney on his former bandmate's forthcoming album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane. He says it started two years ago when he went to producer Andrew Watt's studio and played drums along to Watt on guitar. Fast forward to Ringo recording his new album -- Long Long Road, which comes out this Friday -- and reaching out to Watt to hear what they recorded. Watt never responded, and eventually McCartney sent Ringo some lyrics to sing. "Underneath the duo that Paul and I do, the song, it started with my drums from that day two years ago, and then Paul put everything else on it. So, it was like it was in reverse -- the drums are on first. It's amusing and it's very real because that's where we come from."
McCartney admitted during a recent listening session for the album that there was some confusion with Ringo when it came to recording the song. “I think Ringo thought that all he had to do was play a little bit of drums, and Andrew would make some marvelous thing out of it... [I think] maybe Ringo was a bit pissed that perhaps nothing would come of it." McCartney then had Watt play him Ringo's track and thought, "Wow, that’s really good… We should make the track that Ringo hoped, and then get it over to him and complete the circle." They then sent the song over to Ringo to record his vocals, but all he did was sing on the chorus, which wasn't what McCartney had in mind. "Ringo got the wrong idea. I was thinking, ‘Oh, he doesn’t like it.’ … He thought I maybe just wanted him to sing on the chorus . … I said, ‘Did you not like it?'” After Ringo explained why he only sang on the chorus, McCartney said, "No, it’d be great if you sing the whole thing.” And after that McCartney says he decided to "give one line to me, the next line to Ringo, one line to me. It was really nice, because we’ve never done that.” This marks Ringo's first appearance on a McCartney album since 1997's Flaming Pie where he played drums on two songs -- "Really Love You," which he co-wrote with McCartney, and "Beautiful Night," which he also did background vocals on. The Boys of Dungeon Lane will be released on May 29th.

BOB SEGER: Bar Moves
Bob Seger has been laying pretty low since retiring in 2019, but thanks to a Boston man he's back in the news. For months now, Brian Daly has gone viral for walking into bars, ordering a drink, and classifying them as Bob Seger-friendly or not. This all came about when his friend filmed him asking to hear Seger at Charlie's Kitchen in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The dive bar couldn't provide Mr. Seger's vocal stylings, but the clip went viral and it inspired Daly to search for bars that would honor his request. Speaking to The Detroit News, Daly says, "Bob Seger is absolutely timeless. He speaks for everybody. It's working class, it's the old guy sitting at the bar, reminiscing about the old times. Bob Seger has his own sound, and he's developed his own messaging. He's just a badass dude that any American can get behind. "When I think of Bob Seger, I think of driving to hockey practice as a second-grader, and my dad putting a Night Moves cassette in his truck. Seger reminds guys my age of being a kid, because our dads would play that stuff for us." So now Daly goes into bars and asks, "Is it a bar... or is it a Seger bar?" and those who play a Seger tune are given Seger Bar stickers and plaques. He's also launched a line of merchandise, much of which is sold out.
One person who took notice is Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey who filmed a segment with Daly. "I said from the beginning, I won't stop until I'm able to actually sit down with Bob Seger, ideally playing darts, hopefully having a beer," adds Daly. "People always ask, 'What would you talk to him about?' And I always say the same thing: 'Absolutely nothing.' I wouldn't even mention the fact that I know who he is. "I would just shoot the [breeze] with him, and I wouldn't even fan out to him. I would want the full guy-at-the-bar, random-conversation experience from Bob Seger. Until I get that, I'm not gonna stop." While Seger's office is aware of this, they don't know if he is.
BOB DYLAN: Back to the Scene of the Second Crime
Bob Dylan has added 13 more dates to his summer tour -- July 8th in Chicago through August 1st in Nashville. But the one that stands out is July 21st at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in Queens, New York. That venue was the first stop on his 1965 tour, August 28th, 1965, a month after going electric at the Newport Folk Festival. According to the "History" page on the Stadium's website, "The scene at Forest Hills was equally charged. While the Newport concert is remembered as the one in which Dylan went electric, the show one month later at Forest Hills Stadium is where he truly put his new style to work. Like his Newport set, for the first half of the show he played nearly a half hour of a warmly received acoustic set that included the debut of 'Desolation Row.' "He then returned with Robbie Robertson and Levon Helm from
The Hawks (which would eventually be renamed The Band), bassist Harvey Brooks, and from his band at Newport, Al Kooper on keyboards, picked up an electric guitar, and turned up the amplifiers to embrace a crowd that was ready to boo. "One song in - as in Newport - his passionate folk music fans began to boo. By the second, calls of 'scumbag' were heard in the audience. Later in the show, Dylan unleashed 'Like a Rolling Stone,' which divided the folkies and rock music fans yet again. In some ways, the song was a microcosm of the divide. The folkies saw Dylan as a hero whose genius shined in protest songs like 'Blowin' in the Wind' and 'A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall,' and found his blues rock style as loud and annoying. The rockers simply wanted to let Dylan rock.
"51 years later in 2016, Dylan returned to the Stadium with completely different material, including a barely recognizable recasting of 'Tangled Up in Blue,' to face an adoring crowd that seemed eager to embrace whatever changes Dylan wanted to make." Dylan's next show is this Wednesday in Macon, Georgia.
